Clinical Translational Scientist

Specializes in clinical research, epidemiology, bioinformatics, and machine learning methodologies.

About Dr. Shaia

Shaia is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center studying under Dr. Andreana Holowatyj, a specialist in clinical research focused on rare colorectal cancer. Shaia aims to start her own lab in the near future specifically dedicated to rare diseases, in particular idiopathic intracranial hypertension or IIH . This neuro-metabolic disease mainly impacts young women of a reproductive age. It is a lifelong vision threatening disease that greatly impairs patients' overall quality of life.
Shaia's career goal is take the idiopathic - meaning of an unknown cause - out of the diagnosis of IIH. Through utilizing clinical research, epidemiological, and bioinformatics methodologies, she is determined to find the causality of this disease and others. By finding the cause of a disease, directly tailored treatments and even preventative methods can be developed specifically targeting a disease pathway.

If you would like to connect with Dr. Shaia feel free to send her an email at jkshaia94@gmail.com.

“When you add up all the rare diseases in the United States, a lot of very different diseases are impacting a huge portion of our population,” said Shaia. “My goal is to bring awareness and help find the cause and treatments doing clinical research.”

My scientific goal is to become a neuro-epidemiologist focused on researching understudied diseases including idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). During my career, I hope I can take the idiopathic out of IIH and truly define the cause of this disease. Please feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in a collaboration, have questions, or comments!
